Step by step guidance of how to install an Air Quality Hub

A Space Hub (formerly known as “Hub”) is the device that collects data from all Air Quality sensors and sends data to the cloud, so it can be viewed in the platform.

A Space Hub can collect data from sensors that are within ~100m of it in an open space. Like WiFi, this varies based on thickness of walls and floors between the sensor and the Space Hub, and any other obstacles. It can connect to sensors ~4 floors away from the Space Hub. A single Space Hub can host multiple Airthings sensors at once, as long as they are within range.

You will need to install the Space Hub, as detailed below, before you install any Air Quality sensors.

Step by Step Guide

Platform Configuration

  1. To configure the Space Hub in the platform, click here.

  2. Remove the plastic cover on the back of the Space Hub to reveal the QR code needed to identify the device using your camera, and Serial Number if needing to identify the device manually.

Space Hub Install

The Space Hub can be connected to the cloud in two ways; via cellular or ethernet. We recommend trying to install using cellular first. If you can't get a cellular connection (shown by the green cloud symbol on the Space Hub), use the ethernet method.

Install Using Cellular

  1. Connect Space Hub to power socket using the charger with relevant plug adapter. An eSIM/SIM card is pre-inserted in the Space Hub and is ready for use so you do not need to plug in the Ethernet cable.

  2. The Power Supply symbol should light up green immediately (shown below). Within a few minutes the Cloud Connection symbol (also shown below) should light up as well to show it is connected to the cloud. See troubleshooting if the lights don't appear.

  3. Using the double sided sticky tape, attach the Space Hub to the desired location.

Install Using Ethernet

  1. Connect Space Hub to power socket using the charger with relevant plug adapter.

  2. Connect Space Hub to your ethernet cable, one end of the cable to the Space Hub port (shown below) and the other end to the ethernet outlet

  3. The Power Supply symbol should light up green immediately (shown above). Within a few minutes the Cloud Connection symbol (also shown above) should light up as well to show it is connected to the cloud. See troubleshooting if the lights don't appear.

  4. Using the double sided sticky tape, attach the Space Hub to the desired location.

Hints & Tips

  • Install as close as possible to where the sensor(s) will be installed, to ensure there is strong connectivity between sensor and Space Hub.

  • Sensors do now currently do a periodic scan for closer hubs. They connect to the closest hub based on a scan window as they start up. Depending on environment and signal path, the signal strength can fluctuate a lot, which means that the “physically” closest hub may not be the one “perceived” closest. It could also be a case with a full or temporarily busy hub (i.e. update). For this our recommendation is to install hubs first and then devices so that a device can scan and find the closest hub when it starts up.
