How does it work?

A Range Extender is a passive wireless external antenna that increases the connection between a sensor and a DT (Disruptive Technologies) Cloud Connector (CCON) up to quadruple the range.

The Range Extender is optimised to work well with all sensors from Disruptive Technologies except tactile touch sensors.

Range Extenders:

  1. Classic Range Extender

The Range Extender is a flexible passive external antenna with an adhesive on the backside for easy installation on most surfaces.

Metal surfaces

Mounting the Range Extender directly on a metal surface will not increase the connection range.

Note: If mounting using adhesive tape, for best results, always start with a clean and dry surface. If required, clean the surface as by 3M in this application note.

2. Ambient Temperature Range Extender

The Ambient Range Extender is designed to measure the air temperature in environments with metal surfaces. It lifts the sensor from the surface, such that the temperature reading is not the surface temperature but rather the ambient air temperature.

As metal also adversely affects radio range, it has a built-in range extender that gives a 2x to 4x range improvement.

  • Faster and simpler installation

  • Good range and robust connectivity in challenging environments

  • Correct temperature readings of the ambient temperature, as opposed to the surface temperature

Typical use

  • Fridges

  • Freezers

  • Chiller boxes

  • Cold storage facilities

  • Ventilation systems

3. Pipe Range Extender

The Pipe Range Extender is designed to measure the temperature of a metal pipe while getting maximum radio range (it is a variant of the Surface Range Extender).

Placing a sensor flat on a metal pipe gives a very good measurement of the pipe temperature. Still, as metal absorbs a lot of the Radio Frequency (RF) energy, the radio range is severely degraded.

The Pipe Range Extender solves this by the use of a range extender embedded in a sensor accessory. The sensor is placed on the pipe, with the range extender lifted from the metal pipe. This design allows the radio waves to propagate better, achieving maximum range combined with great thermal coupling to the surface for accurate temperature measurements.

Typical use

  • Hot and cold water taps for Legionella prevention

  • Pipes for cooling liquids in ventilation/cooling/freezer systems
